Sony VX2000 Audio Modifications

I haven’t been satisfied with the audio throughput of my Sony VX2000 for quit some time now. Poor clarity, hiss and just plain lousy dynamic range and frequency response turned me off to the point that I’ve tried external preamps and even a separate recording device.

The thought behind a separate , quality preamp involves inputing a high level signal into the VX2000, usually at line level. This keeping the actual camera preamp use to a minimum and reduces noise considerable. Alas, there is nothing to be done about the dynamic range and poor frequency response.

The BBC have long recognized the superior picture of the VX2000 and found a reasonable way around the audio problem. They bypass the VX2000’s preamps and input the audio at line level (+4db) directly into the Analog to Digital converter. Audio input is then through a quality mic preamp of your choice.

I had Greg Winter of Rochester NY do a mod on my VX2k that's quite similar to the BBC modifications. The preamps are bypassed and the audio in is through the RCA jacks that were for VTR input and playback. For more detail visits Greg’s site at: www.gregjwinter.com/modification2.htm

I received the camera from UPS and immediately setup for my first test. Using a Sound devices Mix Pre and line out into the camera RCA jacks I recorded example using my Oktava and Schoeps. The results were amazing and cleaner than I can get from the Marantz PMD670. I couldn't get the sucker to clip no matter how hard I tried. The Sony's line in to the analog to digital converter is really forgiving. The meter on the Mix Pre was showing peaks to +12db and the new VX2000 audio circuit took it with ease.

For some details on the potential increase to noise, dynamic range and frequency response please refer to Greg’s charts at: www.gregjwinter.com/compare.htm

I’m a very happy camper indeed, I can now use my reasonably good collection of audio gear to their full potential.
