Breaking into the Industry a perspective from a Film Student
by: Matt Concialdi

Here is my thoughts on breaking into the industry as a tv/film student:

Looking ahead upon graduating with a degree in TV/Film and breaking into the industry is something that may seem overwhelming at first. It is all about connections. If you know someone, it is a lot easier to plant a job and break in. In school, we get a general knowledge of the field, from directing, producing, writing, editing, shooting film/video, with no real focus on one aspect. This is good due to the fact that we can go anywhere and be able to play in any field with moderate success. This is where the internships come in. Through internships, connections are made along with the ability to focus ones particular interests and learn the trade. For me editing has always been a passion and unfortunately Cal State Fullerton does not offer any editing classes. The only experience we get is in the production classes editing our projects. The internship that I got is a blessing in that I am able to get my hands on profession equipment and having an opportunity to learn a high end AVID

Trying to break in as a editor will be difficult.Companies are looking for experience and in-order to get that experience you need to be working on projects. I am finding that workshops and extra classes are going to be the answer in breaking in and mastering the software that is needed.

This issue of breaking into the industry comes down to hard work and preparing yourself for success. In doing this, networking is crucial. Willing to start out small and working your way up is the only practicle attitude to have. Very few find overnight success. There is nothing wrong with dreaming, but yet you have to be willing to work hard and keep a positive attitude regardless of failure or success.
